FIRST is an acronym for 'For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology'. It is a non-profit organization that runs school age (1st-12th) programs to promote engineering and technology. The FIRST vision statement reads: "To transform our culture by creating a world where science and technology are celebrated and where young people dream of becoming science and technology heroes." We at Team 499 believe that this means sharing knowledge about how exciting and rewarding science, technology, and engineering can be. Through FIRST, we dive into hands-on activities that challenge our minds and introduce us to new possibilities.

We surround ourselves with mentors who are science and technology leaders that inspire us to develop and expand intelligent, practical skills and to pursue an engineering or technical education. We share what we learn with our community through meetings, seminars, conferences, mentoring, and volunteering. These endeavors foster teamwork, sportsmanship, self-confidence, and communication and leadership skills. Being surrounded by the FIRST culture of Gracious Professionalism leads us to give 110%, respect ourselves and others, and act with integrity in all areas of our lives. This is what FIRST encourages to all who participate and what we promote to others because we want to spread FIRST's message.
