Our Mentors
The Toltech team members are a very capable group of students with a wealth of design creativity and knowledge. They do however benefit greatly from the even greater collective wealth of knowledge and creativity from the industry and higher education mentors who volunteer their time and talents to the team. It became readily appearent to Team founder, Andrew Schuetze, after their rookie season that what this team needed to be successful was a lot more mentoring support. The team has been fortunate over the years to add in new mentors little by little and now have a group with a full range of abilities capable of helping the students become competitive in all aspects of the competition.

When David S. Kelly isn’t working as a Database Administrator, for DPRA Inc., he’s teaching Toltech members Programming. Mr. Pomerening received his Bachelors degree in Aerospace Engineering, from Georgia Institute of Technology.

He has a PhD in electrical engineering and robots are in his blood. As a hobby project while in college, he built a full-size working R2D2 model. The entire team expresses sincere hope and prayers that he recovers from his recent diagnosis with a malignant brain tumor. With eight years behind his belt, Mr. Schuetze stands as the founder and “father” of the Toltechs, Team 499. In charge of all “team operations,” Mr. Schuetze provides a strong sense of stability and assurance to each member. With a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry, Mr. Schuetze completed his Masters degree of Education at UTSA, The University of Texas in San Antonio. Patience is a virtue that Mr. Schuetze has mastered, as he constantly provides words of encouragement and constant advice. Mr. Schuetze’s hard work is well recognized within the San Antonio area.
